Turquoise
Since the 1860's, Native Americans of the Southwestern United States have made turquoise jewelry. Historians of American Indian culture and collectors of Western American antiques are among those who look for vintage turquoise rings, besides those that just appreciate it for its obvious beauty.
Turquoise is a mineral with a brilliant sky-blue to greenish-blue color with flecks or patterns of brown or gray in it. Specifically, these marks are called matrix, and are characteristic of an authentic turquoise. This mineral has been in existence for thousands of years, and is one of the oldest gemstones and can be traced back to ancient Egyptian times. It is even said that Tutankhamen's head mask had turquoise embellishments in it. Even though turquoise was popular in ancient times, it is still sought after today.
Turquoise comes with many stories of how it can help alleviate the symptoms of gout, rheumatism, viral infections, and stomach problems. These add to the reasons why some people want to have a vintage turquoise ring. Between 1900 and 1940, a growing number of rings were hand-made with natural American turquoise. There are many vintage turquoise rings available from that era to add to one's jewelry collection.
