Amethyst

Amethyst has been used in vintage amethyst rings for as far back as Ancient Egyptians. Cultures of the past often attributed powers to the amethyst gem. The Greeks believed it prevented intoxication. Medieval Europeans wore them into battle for protection.

As recent as the 18th century the Amethyst was regarded as one of the most valuable gemstones alongside the diamond, emerald, and ruby. This changed with the discovery of large deposits in Brazil and elsewhere.

Victorian / Edwardian 1837 – 1910

Vintage amethyst rings were popular through the Romantic Period and Grand Period of the Victorian Era and somewhat fell out during the Aesthetic Period. The Romantic period represented the sentimental period. It was a time to reflect on the marriage of the young Queen Victoria. Many of the vintage amethyst rings reflected nature including plants and animals. The Grand Period was a bit darker following the death of Victoria’s husband. Dark colored gems were to be worn during this time of mourning. The Aesthetic Period, along with the Edwardian Era, ended the period of mourning and as women rose in society clothing became smaller and more flexible. Vintage ring styles followed becoming smaller and lighter. Gem value was placed lower on the list giving a rise to the less precious gems.

Art Nouveau / Art Deco 1895 – 1935

Art Nouveau and Art Deco were more about an artistic movement more than a prestigious style. These styles started during the end of the Victorian Era and during the Edwardian Era. Art Nouveau was started along with the Industrial Revolution. During this period or art movement more focus was placed on the artistic value of the jewelry and less on the value of the materials. The styles often mimicked nature having more flowing designs like vines or leaves. The Art deco styling of amethyst vintage rings had more of geometric and symmetrical style. This gave Art Deco a more streamlined appearance.

Retro / Vintage 1930s – 1980s

This is where you will find the largest number of vintage amethyst rings. Considering it is the most recent era along with the wide use of machines making mass production easy. There was more emphasis placed on the metal of the rings as opposed to the gem due to the shortage caused by Word War II. When gems were used less precious gems with brilliant colors were chosen, often being place in clusters.
